Intuition Skate opens at Grand Island Village, connecting a longtime Bakersfield shop with the trails, families, and active culture of the community

When Intuition Skate opens its new location at Grand Island Village this summer, the shop arrives with a long local history and a simple premise. Skating is something people discover together.
Matthew Mickey has been building that idea for decades. A Bakersfield native and lifelong resident, he started rollerblading at fourteen and quickly realized the activity was more than a pastime. It became a way to move through the world and meet people along the way.
In 2000, Mickey opened Intuition Skate Shop in downtown Bakersfield to serve a community of inline skaters that had few dedicated resources at the time. Over the years the shop expanded to include roller skating, roller hockey, and ice skating gear, welcoming beginners and longtime skaters alike. A second location followed in Santa Monica in 2021.
Now Intuition Skate is establishing a new presence in Seven Oaks, a place Mickey says already feels designed for movement. Grand Island Village sits only minutes from Stephen J. DeBranch Memorial Trail and the bike trail that winds through nearby neighborhoods and connects to destinations across the area.
“Grand Island almost feels like it chose Intuition,” Mickey said. “You are surrounded by parks, schools, trails, and businesses that support an active lifestyle.”

Inside the shop, customers will find inline skates, roller skates, and protective gear for every age and experience level. Mickey places particular emphasis on helping people find the right fit, an in-store process that helps newcomers begin with confidence and longtime skaters return to something they once loved.
For families in Seven Oaks, he sees skating as something that reaches beyond recreation. It introduces young people to independence and gives them a way to develop confidence in public spaces.
Many adults remember their first trip to a roller rink for a birthday party or school event. The moment when a child makes it around the floor without touching the wall becomes a small milestone that sticks in their memory.
Those early experiences often lead to something larger. Skating becomes a way to spend time with friends, to improve at a physical skill, and to express personality through movement.
Intuition Skate plans to connect customers with Bakersfield’s broader skating community through lessons, meetups, and group outings along the trails of Seven Oaks and Riverwalk, as well as at local rinks and skate parks. The goal is to introduce people to an activity that can become part of daily life.
After more than two decades in business, Mickey sees the Grand Island Village shop as a new chapter for a sport that continues to evolve.
“Skating has never let go of my heart,” he said. “Helping people discover it for themselves is still the best part of what we do.”
